Mangaluru: A major mishap was miraculously averted on Monday at Kettikal in Vamanjoor when a massive boulder rolled down a hillside and crashed onto an excavator (Hitachi) engaged in highway expansion work. The operator of the heavy machinery experienced a close brush with death but fortunately managed to escape completely unhurt.
The excavation work was being carried out in an area that had already been classified as hazardous following a significant landslide during last year’s monsoon season. Due to the recent continuous rainfall, the soil on the hillside had loosened significantly, causing the large rock to lose its footing and slide down. The boulder crashed directly onto the front bucket of the excavator. Recognizing the immediate danger, the alert operator jumped out of the cabin instantly, ensuring his safety. The excavator currently remains stuck deep in the loose mud at the site.
