Kundapura : Following a prolonged closure due to a massive landslide, the affected section of the Kundapura-Shivamogga State Highway 52 along the Hulikal Ghat has undergone partial restoration. In light of the completed work, the district administrations of both Shivamogga and Udupi/Uttara Kannada have issued official orders permitting the resumption of light vehicles and local shuttle (majalu) buses along the route.
The critical state highway had been completely blocked for 70 days due to the severe landslide, cutting off a major transit link. Following extensive clearance and stabilization efforts, the partial reopening took effect on June 19, allowing light motor vehicles and shuttle buses to navigate the ghat section once again, bringing much-needed relief to commuters.
The phased reopening began after the Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner issued an official directive on June 12 authorizing light vehicle movement, which initially rolled out on June 13. This mandate has now been expanded to accommodate local shuttle buses alongside smaller passenger vehicles.
During the initial phase of resuming traffic on June 13, both the Regional Transport Department and the Police Department closely inspected the landslide-prone zone. They issued strict instructions to implement a series of precautionary and safety measures at the site to prevent further mishaps and ensure smooth, controlled vehicular movement through the ghat.
