Mangaluru : The historic ‘Kalasha’, a prominent landmark at the entrance of Mangaluru city, was grandly reinstalled and dedicated to the public on Saturday evening at Mahaveera Circle, Pumpwell. Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, the Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala, officially inaugurated the reinstalled cultural symbol by lighting a lamp. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath, MLC Ivan D’Souza, and SCDCC Bank President Dr. M.N. Rajendra Kumar, all witnessing the return of one of the city’s most cherished identities.
More than just a monument, the Kalasha is deeply intertwined with the emotional and cultural heritage of the people of Mangaluru. It was originally removed in 2016 to facilitate the construction of the Pumpwell flyover. Since then, there has been a persistent demand from the public to bring back the structure that once enhanced the city’s aesthetic appeal. Responding to this public sentiment, the reinstallation project was spearheaded by the Jain Society. The reconstruction work, which commenced in October last year, has now been successfully completed, restoring the landmark to its former glory.
The newly reinstalled Kalasha has added a fresh charm to the beauty of Mangaluru, serving as a welcoming sight for tourists and travelers entering the city. Symbolizing Jain culture and the communal harmony of the coastal region, its return has brought immense joy to the local residents. Standing tall in the spacious area near the Pumpwell flyover, the Kalasha serves as a perfect bridge between the city’s rapid modern development and its rich traditional roots.
