Mangaluru : The coastal city of Mangaluru is all set to witness a massive spiritual and cultural spectacle as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Mangalore Kulai, hosts its highly anticipated Annual Sri Jagannath Ratha Yatra today, Thursday, July 16, 2026. Drawing inspiration from the historic chariot festival of Puri, this grand celebration is expected to attract thousands of eager devotees, spiritual seekers, and visitors from Mangaluru, Udupi, and neighboring regions. The streets will be transformed into a sea of devotion, filled with music, dance, and cultural unity as the majestic chariot passes through.
The sacred procession will kick off at 4:00 PM from the bustling Surathkal Junction and slowly make its way to the ISKCON Temple located in Kulai. An exquisitely decorated chariot carrying the deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladeva, and Devi Subhadra will lead the march. Accompanying the divine chariot will be hundreds of devotees chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, supported by traditional musical ensembles, brass bands, and colorful dance performances. Organizers emphasize that pulling the chariot ropes is considered highly auspicious in Vedic traditions, symbolizing the Lord coming out of the sanctum sanctorum to bless everyone, transcending all barriers of social background, religion, and caste.
Upon the procession reaching the temple, the festivities will transition into a grand cultural evening. A spectacular Yakshagana theatrical performance—showcasing coastal Karnataka’s rich heritage of classical music, dance, and mythology—will be staged from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Reflecting ISKCON’s core values of hospitality and selfless service, a massive community feast (prasadam) will be served free of charge to all attendees, promoting a message of equality and universal brotherhood.
Apart from organizing such grand festivals, the ISKCON Mangalore Kulai temple has emerged as a major center for holistic development and spiritual learning. The center holds international acclaim for running the world’s largest online Bhagavad-gita course, which has successfully educated over a million students across twelve languages. The temple complex in Kulai houses a vibrant community center, a goshala for cow protection, an Annadana hall serving free daily meals, and is currently constructing a futuristic Vedic College to blend ancient ethics with contemporary education.
Speaking on the auspicious occasion, Nama Nishtha Das, an IIT Kanpur graduate who serves as the President of ISKCON Mangalore Kulai, stated that the Ratha Yatra represents boundless divine mercy. He noted that in today’s stressful world, the festival offers a golden opportunity for individuals to disconnect from anxiety and experience genuine inner happiness through community bonding, sacred chanting, and service. Extensive safety and logistical arrangements have been put in place by the temple volunteers and local civic authorities to ensure a seamless and joyful experience for the thousands of families attending the mega event.
