Mangaluru : A special study team from the Janata Dal (Secular) party, formed to assess the extensive damage caused by monsoon rains and natural disasters across Karnataka, visited several affected areas in Dakshina Kannada district to conduct a thorough on-the-spot inspection. Led by the committee’s chairman and Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), S.L. Bhojegowda, the delegation reviewed the ground reality of the affected areas to understand the severity of the situation.
Accompanied by JDS district president Jake Madhava Gowda, youth wing district president Akshit Suvarna, and district general secretary Yogish Shetty Jeppu, among other key party leaders, the delegation first visited the Nagori area, which recently witnessed a tragic landslide resulting in the loss of precious lives. MLC S.L. Bhojegowda met with the grieving families who have been severely affected by the disaster, offered his heartfelt condolences, and listened to their grievances. He also interacted with the local residents to gather firsthand information regarding the recurring dangers during the monsoon, the factors contributing to the landslide, and the immediate safety measures required.
Speaking on the occasion, Bhojegowda urged the state government to immediately sanction adequate compensation, rehabilitation, and essential infrastructure to the families pushed into distress by the natural calamity. He emphasized the urgent need to scientifically identify high-risk, landslide-prone areas and construct robust retaining walls, storm-water drains, and other preventive systems.
Following this, the study team headed to the Battappady area in Someshwar to inspect the severe sea erosion threatening the coastline. Witnessing the extensive damage inflicted upon houses, roads, and public property by the ferocious waves, the team interacted with local fishermen and residents. Sukesh G.K. Uchil, president of the ‘Save Battappady’ committee, explained how the intensifying sea erosion year after year has forced coastal communities to live in constant fear. In response, Bhojegowda demanded that the government shift from temporary patch-up works to implementing sustainable, scientific sea-walls and ensure swift, fair compensation for the affected fishermen.
Concluding the visit, the JDS delegation met Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Darshan Kavar to submit a comprehensive memorandum highlighting the critical issues observed at the Nagori landslide and Someshwar sea erosion sites. They held detailed discussions with the DC regarding the immediate relief measures required. Acknowledging the memorandum, the Deputy Commissioner detailed the steps already taken by the district administration and assured the delegation that the remaining issues would be escalated to the state government’s attention on priority.
Several prominent leaders, including JDS Fisheries Wing state president Ratnakar Suvarna, working president Iqbal Mulki, Mangaluru South constituency president Pushparajan, youth wing North constituency president Ratheesh Karkera, Mangaluru constituency president Prakash Asaigoli, legal wing president Bharathi Pushparajan, and JDS leaders Umesh Y.
