Karnataka Faces Power Deficit Amid Soaring Demand; Day-Long Outage Announced in Mangaluru on Sept 15

Mangaluru : Rising temperatures and a severe monsoon deficit have triggered a sharp increase in electricity demand across Karnataka, leading to unannounced load shedding in several parts of the state. The daily power demand in the state has touched 19,140 MW against a total generation of 18,889 MW, resulting in a daily shortfall of nearly 251 MW. Increased usage of air conditioners and coolers, alongside technical snags at thermal power plants in Raichur, Ballari, and Yellapur, as well as reduced supply from central generating stations, have exacerbated the crisis. Authorities state the disruption is temporary and are working to balance supply and demand during peak hours from 6 AM to 8 AM and 6 PM to 9 PM.

Adding to the strain, Karnataka is obligated under prior banking agreements to return electricity to Haryana and Uttar Pradesh during the monsoon season for power received in the summer. Furthermore, grid management remains challenging as officials must conserve reservoir water levels to prevent severe shortages during the upcoming summer. Amidst this overall supply pressure, MESCOM has announced a scheduled day-long power shutdown in key parts of Mangaluru on September 15 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM to facilitate urgent maintenance work across the Ekkur New, Gorigudda, Naguri, and Pumpwell feeders.

The outage on September 15 will impact multiple prominent areas, including Sneha School, Gorigudda, Ekkur Junction, Guruprasad Lane, Ujjodi, Northern Sky, Pumpwell, Maruti Garage, Reliance, Nekkaremar, Vishwas Bhavan, Gold Palace, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Maroli, Padil, Alape, Meghanagar, Naguri, Garodi, Netravathi Layout, Capitanio, Red Building, Railway Station, CAD Centre, Indian Hospital, Nitte Education, Mahaveer Circle, and nearby surroundings.
