Kasaragod : A frightening incident occurred during a Theyyam festival in Nileshwar when a young spectator collapsed after being accidentally struck by a wooden shield held by the performer. The mishap took place at the Vishnumurthi Temple in Pallikkara, near the Nileshwar railway overpass, during the ‘Vellattam’ ritual of the deity Poomaruthan.
The Accident During the Ritual: During the high-energy performance, the Theyyam artist was swinging a traditional wooden shield with great force and speed as part of the ritualistic dance. In the process, the shield accidentally struck the head of a young man who was standing among the spectators. The impact was severe enough to cause the youth to lose consciousness and collapse on the spot.
Medical Status and Safety Concerns: The injured youth was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical attention. According to the doctors, his condition is currently stable, and he is out of danger. While Theyyam is a revered religious and folk art form in Kerala involving intense movements with swords and shields, this accident has sparked discussions among locals regarding the need for better safety measures and crowd management during such large-scale temple festivals.
