Mangaluru : Hilda Alva, a veteran Congress leader and former Mayor of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), passed away at a private hospital on Thursday following a prolonged illness. The 72-year-old esteemed politician is survived by her husband, a son, and a daughter. Resident of Kavoor and a prominent parishioner under the Bondel Church jurisdiction, she was a pioneering figure in local administration and social service, notably founding the Catholic Women’s Government Association and serving as its first president.
Alva’s illustrious political career spanned nearly two decades, during which she represented the Pachanady and Akashabhavan wards as a corporator in the Mangaluru City Corporation from 1983 to 2001. She reached a historic milestone in her career when she served as the Mayor of Mangaluru from 1998 to 1999, earning the distinction of being only the second woman to ever hold the mayoral office in the city. Beyond her administrative roles, she was deeply involved in party organization, serving in various capacities including the Vice President of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee.
Her demise has triggered widespread grief across the political and social spectrum of the coastal district.
