Mangaluru : A group of over 150 international tourists, who arrived at the New Mangalore Port aboard the luxury cruise ship Oceania, visited the heritage sites of Pilikula on Sunday. The visitors spent significant time exploring the Guttu Mane (traditional manor house) and the Artisan Village, which are key attractions under the Pilikula Development Authority. This visit highlights Mangaluru’s growing prominence as a destination for cultural and heritage tourism on the international cruise circuit.
During their tour of the Artisan Village, the tourists witnessed live demonstrations of age-old traditional crafts that have been preserved for generations. They observed the intricate processes of pottery, blacksmithing, carpentry, and cane and bamboo weaving. The visitors showed keen interest in unique traditional activities such as the manual oil mill (Gaana) and the traditional method of beating rice (Avalakki). The interactive sessions allowed the tourists to gain deep insights into the rural lifestyle and the ancestral craftsmanship of the coastal region.
The excursion was managed by Mangaluru’s prominent travel agency, Lia Travels, which regularly organizes such heritage tours for international cruise passengers. According to a press release from the Commissioner of the Pilikula Development Authority, the visit was a success, providing the guests with an authentic experience of Tulu Nadu’s rich cultural legacy. Such visits continue to promote local artisans and provide a global platform for the traditional arts of Dakshina Kannada.
