Mangaluru : A grand 78-meter tall flagpole has been erected at the historic Tagore Park in Bavutagudda, bringing a new pride to the coastal cultural city of Mangaluru. Elaborate preparations are underway to officially unfurl the national tricolor atop this massive structure on the upcoming Independence Day on August 15. Situated on one of the highest points in the city, this major tourist and historical landmark is set to offer a majestic view of the fluttering national flag from various parts of Mangaluru.
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 75 lakh under the Mangaluru Smart City project, the installation was funded by depositing Smart City funds with the Mangaluru City Corporation. The engineering feat involved assembling giant metallic sections sourced from Raipur using heavy-duty cranes. Managed by ‘Sunlight Luminaries’, the GI metal structure weighs nearly 14 tonnes and incorporates advanced infrastructure, including a motorized flag hoisting mechanism with a three-phase power supply, a lightning arrestor, and red aviation indicator lights on both sides to alert passing aircraft.
To withstand the strong coastal winds of Mangaluru, a specially crafted 30×45-foot polyester national flag has been designed, which will serve as the centerpiece of this monument. Bavutagudda holds deep historical significance, as it was a key location where the national flag was raised during India’s freedom struggle. Re-establishing this heritage with a modern 78-meter flagpole honors its storied past while adding a prominent new landmark to Mangaluru’s skyline.
