Mangalore University VC Addresses Faculty Shortage, Exam Results, and Infrastructure Plans

Mangaluru : Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof. P.L. Dharma addressed a press conference at the University College Hall in Hampankatta on Thursday, highlighting the severe staff crunch on campus and the measures being taken to resolve key academic issues. He stated that a letter has been sent to the Higher Education Department Secretary, Tulasimaddineni, drawing attention to the severe shortage of professors since 2018, which has adversely affected students and research centers. Currently, out of 273 sanctioned teaching posts, 158 remain vacant, while 387 out of 547 non-teaching posts are also unfilled. Although guest faculty are being utilized to bridge the gap, the minimal age difference between them and the students often hinders students from expressing their concerns effectively.

Prof. Dharma also provided updates on administrative and academic progress, noting that pension issues for 460 retired staff have been resolved using the Pension Fund Trust, ensuring timely monthly disbursements. Regarding unapproved academic programs, he clarified that classes with extremely low enrollments—where paying multiple faculty members for two or three students became unviable—were temporarily suspended with government permission, and those students were shifted to the main campus. Moving forward, enrollment is being carried out for 46 programs across 25 departments. On the examination front, the university achieved a 98.47% result processing rate for undergraduate 6th and 8th semester exams, declaring results for 17,076 out of 17,347 students on July 29 via the UUCMS portal thanks to fully digitized online evaluation. Postgraduate results are currently under process. Furthermore, addressing the status of the Belapu Science Research Centre, the VC mentioned that due to a lack of senior professors, researchers, and modern labs, a proposal has been submitted to convert the facility into a state-of-the-art government-sponsored Sports Academy. Registrars Santosh, Devendrappa, and Siddalinga Swamy were also present at the press meet.
