Kundapuru : A rare and surprising sight unfolded at Maravanthe beach on Saturday afternoon, February 21, as a massive school of Sardines (locally known as Boothai or Baige) washed up near the shore right in front of the Maraswamy Temple. The sudden appearance of the fish drew immediate attention from locals, tourists, and passing motorists who stopped their vehicles to witness the phenomenon. Many were seen rushing into the shallow waters to collect the fish with their bare hands, bags, and buckets.
The event quickly became a sensation on social media as onlookers captured the frantic fish-gathering scenes on their mobile phones and shared the videos online. It is a common sight to see people competing to grab as much of the fresh catch as possible during such rare occurrences. The beach, which is already a popular tourist destination due to the proximity of the highway and the sea, saw an unusual surge in activity throughout the afternoon.
Environmental observers and the public expressed surprise at this incident, noting that Sardines typically migrate toward deeper, cooler waters during periods of extreme heat. Seeing them move so close to the shoreline in such large numbers has sparked curiosity among the local community. While the exact reason for this behavior remains a topic of discussion, for the people present at the beach, it was an unexpected bounty from the sea.
