Mangaluru : In response to numerous public complaints regarding private and KSRTC buses skipping designated routes and canceling scheduled trips, Mangaluru City South MLA Vedavyas Kamath chaired a high-level meeting at the RTO office. The discussion brought together senior transport officials, bus owners’ associations, and public representatives to address the growing inconvenience faced by commuters. The MLA highlighted that while the bus service in the city has a long-standing reputation for reliability, recent negligence in areas like Saripalla-Kannagudde (Ward 51), Bajal Padpu-Pallakere (Ward 53), Shaktinagar, and Maroli has severely impacted residents, especially students and workers who depend entirely on public transport.
The meeting followed a directive from Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, who instructed RTO officials to resolve the issue under the local MLA’s leadership. During the session, RTO officials issued a stern warning: all KSRTC and private buses must strictly adhere to their permitted routes and schedules within the next 15 days. Failure to comply will result in stringent action, including the mandatory transfer of permits to operators willing to serve those specific routes. This decisive move was welcomed by both the public representatives and the bus owners’ associations present at the meeting.
Additionally, MLA Kamath issued several instructions to improve urban transit and administrative efficiency. He mandated that all buses must utilize the newly constructed “Bus Bay” near Mangaladevi Circle, built under the Smart City project, to prevent traffic congestion. He also urged transport officials to streamline RTO processes to reduce the hardships faced by the general public and addressed civic concerns raised by Hanumanth Kamath of the Nagarika Hitarakshana Samithi. Key officials including KSRTC DC Rajesh, bus association leaders, and various public representatives participated in the deliberation.
