Udupi : In a significant breakthrough, the Kaup police have arrested the notorious South Indian thief, Umesh Balegar, also known as Umesh Reddy, in connection with a high-profile burglary case. The 47-year-old accused, a resident of Balegar House in Mallar, was apprehended on January 2nd. During the subsequent interrogation, Reddy confessed to breaking into the residence of Raghavendra Kini on Kaup Main Road in Mallar on December 4th. He further revealed that the stolen gold ornaments had been transported and sold in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
Following this lead, a special investigation team was formed under the leadership of Prabhu D.T., the in-charge Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Karkala Sub-division, along with Kaup Circle Inspector Azmat Ali G. The crime detection squad escorted the accused to Madurai to pinpoint the location where the loot was disposed of. Based on the identification provided by the accused, the police successfully traced and seized a gold biscuit weighing 55 grams, which has now been taken into custody as part of the official investigation.
The successful recovery operation involved a coordinated effort from several departments and personnel. The team included District Fingerprint Bureau Inspector L. Mohana Kumari and her staff, Kaup PSI Shubhakar, Padubidri PSI Anil Kumar T. Nayak, and various officers from Karkala Rural and Shirva police stations. Additionally, staff from the Kaup Circle Inspector’s office and the Udupi District Police CDR division played a crucial role in the technical and logistical execution of the recovery, ensuring that the stolen property was safely returned to the jurisdiction.
