Mangaluru : Panakkad Sayyid Nasser Abdul Hayy Shihabuddin Thangal Ba-Alavi has been chosen as the new Khazi of Dakshina Kannada district. The position fell vacant following the sad demise of Al haj Twaka Ahmed Musliyar. The official announcement was made on Saturday by Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, the President of the Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid Management Committee in Mangaluru.
Thangal, a highly revered Islamic scholar from Kerala, had given his formal consent to take up the prestigious spiritual responsibility a few days ago. Consequently, a crucial meeting of representatives from various regional mosques was convened under the leadership of the Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid Management Committee on Saturday, where his appointment was formally declared to the community.
The significant meeting witnessed the presence of prominent community leaders and committee members, including Eidgah and Central Juma Masjid Vice President K. Ashraf, General Secretary Muhammad Hanif Haji, Treasurer S.M. Rasheed Haji, and members Samad Haji, Addu Haji, and Ashraf Halemane. Additionally, DK District Madrasa Management President Moyidinabba Haji and noted entrepreneur Yenepoya Javid, among others, marked their attendance.
The newly appointed Khazi, born on May 2, 1966, in Poovad near Panakkad in Kerala’s Malappuram district, possesses an illustrious spiritual background. Beginning his primary education at an Othupalli, he dedicated 13 years to intensive Islamic studies through the Palli Dars system. Hailing from the revered Yemeni Sayyid lineage, which traces its roots back to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he served as a Khateeb and Mudarris at several prominent mosques and Islamic institutions after graduation. Following his father’s demise, he took over spiritual leadership as the Khazi of the Andaman Islands. In 2009, he was designated as the Grand Khazi of Calicut. He currently oversees spiritual affairs as the Khazi for more than 300 Mohallas spanning across the Calicut, Malappuram, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts. Furthermore, he serves as the Principal of Imam Ghazali Academy and Rashidiya Arabic College in Wayanad, and patronizes the Shine Institute of Social Leadership. His leadership extensions include being the President of Sunni Mahal Federation’s Malappuram District Maslahat Committee, a State Committee Member of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS) in Kerala, and the Vice President of Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama’s Tirurangadi Taluk Committee.
