Mangaluru : In a deeply saddening development, the highly acclaimed orthopedic specialist Dr. Umananda Mallya (74) breathed his last on July 4 following a period of illness at a private hospital in Mangaluru. The distinguished medical professional is survived by his wife and two sons.
Dr. Mallya had a stellar academic association with the city’s prestigious Kasturba Medical College (KMC), where he successfully completed his MBBS degree along with a Diploma in Orthopedics (D.Ortho) and a Master of Surgery (MS). He further dedicated a significant part of his professional career to his alma mater, serving with distinction as the Head of the Department of Orthopedics at the KMC Hospital located in Attavar.
Beyond his exemplary medical career, Dr. Mallya was deeply rooted in spiritual and social services, notably dedicating many years of devotion at the Shree Venkataramana Temple in Car Street, Mangaluru, where he was revered as one of the senior-most volunteers. He also took up leadership roles in cultural and religious festivities, serving as the president of the Acharya Matha Sharada Mahotsava Samiti. He earned widespread respect and a lasting legacy for his profound empathy toward the underprivileged sections of society, to whom he frequently provided medical treatments entirely free of cost.
