Mangaluru : In a significant address during the Zero Hour of the Lok Sabha, Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta raised a matter of grave concern: the attempt by the banned organization, the Popular Front of India (PFI), to re-enter India’s electoral system through its political wing, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), by operating under the guise of SDPI workers. Capt. Chowta stressed that this subtle but determined effort poses a major threat to the nation’s democracy and its national security architecture.
Citing a press release issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on November 8, 2025, Capt. Chowta informed the House that the ED report explicitly states that SDPI functions as the political facade of the banned PFI. Furthermore, the report highlights the critical issue that PFI not only controls the political activities of the SDPI but also provides it with funding. Chowta argued that since PFI is a proscribed organization, any covert path it utilizes to influence elections compromises the unity and integrity of the nation.
The MP also drew the attention of the House to recent security incidents in his constituency. He noted that the coastal Karnataka region, particularly the Dakshina Kannada district, has continuously suffered due to the nefarious activities of the banned PFI. Chowta specifically referenced the recent murder of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty in Dakshina Kannada, the investigation for which has now been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following the timely intervention of the Union Home Minister. This murder, he warned, is an example proving that his region is constantly vulnerable to attacks by such extremist elements.
With local body elections approaching in Karnataka, Capt. Chowta emphasized the urgent need to address the political link between the banned PFI and the SDPI, especially since SDPI has secured several positions in Dakshina Kannada’s local bodies in recent years. He highlighted the alarming instance where SDPI supported opposition candidates in the Bantwal Town Municipality President’s election last year. Chowta escalated his concerns by accusing the ruling Congress party in Karnataka of continuously fostering such forces through an unwritten understanding with the SDPI. He concluded by asserting that the Congress party appears to show no remorse regarding its alleged nexus with SDPI and PFI, calling it a matter of profound concern for the people of Karnataka.
Finally, appealing to the government’s zero-tolerance policy against terrorism under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Capt. Chowta urged the Union Home Minister to seriously consider the ED’s findings. He called for immediate necessary action to curb the attempts by banned organizations to continue their activities in new forms or to gain electoral legitimacy by using political parties as a front. While acknowledging the democratic right to contest elections, he concluded that the nation’s security must be the foremost priority.
