Mangaluru : In a heartwarming gesture marking the fourth death anniversary of the late Devaki Sanjeeva Shetty, her sons officially handed over a newly constructed house to Girija, a resident belonging to the underprivileged Koraga community in Hosalakke, Moodushedde. The keys to the new house were presented on Tuesday during an inaugural ceremony, which commenced with guests lighting the traditional lamp.
Speaking at the event, advocate Umesh Shetty Hosalakke stated that their late mother was a compassionate soul who always extended help to those in distress. Guided by her principles, the brothers approached the Moodushedde Panchayat seeking an opportunity to serve society in her memory. Following a recommendation by the Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) regarding Girija’s family, whose old house had completely collapsed, the brothers stepped in to build a well-furnished tiled house at an estimated cost of ₹10 lakh. Equipped with modern tiles and a television set, the home was designed to provide a comfortable life for the mother and her two school-going children.
Inaugurating the event, Mulki-Moodbidri MLA Umanath Kotian highlighted the importance of character-building, noting that despite severe poverty in earlier times, parents prioritized teaching moral values to their children. He emphasized that it was this very upbringing that inspired the Shetty brothers to undertake such a meaningful initiative. He urged modern families to inspire the younger generation to look beyond academic education and develop virtues of empathy and social service to build a stronger community.
Adding to this, former MP Nalin Kumar Kateel praised the initiative, contrasting it with the contemporary trend of sending aging parents to old-age homes. He commended the brothers for honoring their mother’s legacy by sheltering a destitute family, describing it as a truly divine act. Similarly, Ajith Kumar Rai Maladi, President of Bantara Yane Nadavara Mathru Sangha, remarked that a harmonious society free from caste discrimination can collectively eradicate homelessness, wishing the family continued strength for their future philanthropic endeavors.
The stage was graced by several prominent dignitaries, including MLC Kishore Kumar Botyadi, entrepreneur Ibrahim Gadiyar, former Mayor Bhaskar Moily, Manjunath Bhandary Shedde, entrepreneur Maheshwarappa, and Moodushedde Panchayat PDO Jayaprakash. Other notable attendees included Prakash Poojary, Shivaram Malli, Vishnumurthy Temple Management Committee President Shivarama, Koraga Association District President Sundara Beluvai, alongside Vishwanath Shetty Hosalakke, Karunakar Shetty Hosalakke, Kusuma Dasanna Shetty, and community head Jatti Poojary Jara. The event commenced with a welcome address by Umesh Shetty Hosalakke, followed by a prayer song by Sharan Shetty Posalakke, while Purushottama Bhandary Adyar successfully compered the entire program. Reflecting on the noble deed, Ramesh Edurupadavu, former District President of the Koraga Association, concluded that providing a well-equipped home to a vulnerable family is an act of God, assuring that such selfless service towards the downtrodden will always invite divine blessings.
