Udupi : The Udupi City Police have arrested two individuals in connection with an extortion case where they allegedly issued death threats to an elderly man, demanding ₹5 lakh by falsely claiming his deceased son owed them money for diamonds. The arrested suspects have been identified as Sajid, a resident of Santosh Nagar in Perampalli near Udupi, and Syed Saif Ahmed (40), hailing from Kempanahalli in Kunigal Taluk, Tumakuru district.
According to the complaint, the culprits contacted Ajith Padiyar on July 2, insisting he clear an alleged ₹5 lakh debt left unpaid by his son regarding a diamond transaction. When Ajith clarified that his son had passed away eight years ago and he was entirely unaware of any such transaction, the fraudsters escalated their tactic. They subsequently called Ajith’s other son, Amit, who currently resides in Dubai, threatening to harm his wife, Rakshali, who lives in their home town, if the demanded sum was not handed over.
Following a formal complaint filed at the Udupi Town Police Station, a police team launched an investigation that led to the capture of the suspects. Sajid and Syed Saif Ahmed were apprehended on July 20 and August 26, respectively. Both accused were presented before the court, and the police have taken Syed Saif Ahmed into custody for further interrogation to uncover deeper details behind the extortion plot.
