Udupi : The Udupi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has handed down a stern three-year simple imprisonment sentence and a penalty of ₹1 lakh to Amrith Shenoy for his deliberate failure to comply with a judicial directive. Pronounced on June 24, 2026, the commission’s ruling further stipulates that a default on the fine payment will attract an additional six months of simple imprisonment for the convict.
The punitive action stems from a consumer dispute brought before the commission by the complainant, Santhosh Pai. In the initial litigation, the consumer body had legally directed Shenoy to officially complete the property registration of Flat No. 304 within the Vygor Apartment complex in favor of the petitioner. Alternatively, the developer was mandated to refund a sum of ₹27,20,000 along with a 9% interest rate to the buyer. However, Shenoy chose to disregard the ruling, showing total non-compliance with the legal mandate.
Driven by this persistent defiance, Santhosh Pai approached the commission again to file an execution petition under Case No. 31/2024 to enforce the decree. Upon reviewing the execution case, the commission concluded that Shenoy’s willful evasion of the court’s order constituted a serious and punishable offense under Section 72 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, thereby leading directly to the jail term and financial penalty.
