Udupi Rain Update: Holiday Declared for Schools on August 4; Colleges to Function as Usual

Udupi : In light of continuous heavy rainfall across Udupi district over the past few days and a Yellow Alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), District Collector Swaroopa T.K. has declared a holiday for all Anganwadis, government, aided, and private primary and high schools on August 4 as a precautionary measure for student safety. However, pre-university colleges (PUC), ITIs, diplomas, degree courses, postgraduate programs, and engineering colleges will not have a holiday and will function as scheduled. To compensate for the lost academic hours, school authorities have been advised to conduct extra classes on Saturday afternoons or Sundays.

For higher educational institutions that remain open, the district administration has issued strict precautionary guidelines to college heads. Student attendance must not be made mandatory, and utmost priority must be given to safety during student commutes. Students who need to cross overflowing streams or rivulets to reach their institutions have been advised to stay safely at home. Additionally, management must ensure that dilapidated or structurally weak buildings are not used for classes, and thorough safety checks of campus infrastructure must be conducted to prevent any mishaps.

Parents and educational institution heads have been strongly urged to ensure that children do not venture near waterlogged low-lying areas, ponds, rivers, or beaches. Special attention must also be given to the safety of school and college transport vehicles, alongside educating students on basic disaster management awareness.
