Udupi: Woman Arrested in Padubidri Fake Gold Scam Case; Accomplice at Large
The Padubidri police have made a significant breakthrough in a fraudulent gold exchange case by arresting a female suspect involved in cheating a pedestrian near the old post office in Padubidri, Kaup taluk. The incident occurred when the victim, a woman named Bassamma, was approached by an unknown man and woman while she was walking. The duo befriended her and displayed a gold-colored chain, claiming it weighed 6 sovereigns. They feigned a financial emergency and convinced Bassamma to exchange her genuine jewelry and cash for the “gold” chain.
Believing their story, Bassamma handed over her authentic gold ornaments weighing approximately 2 sovereigns, valued at nearly ₹1.50 lakh, along with ₹6,000 in cash. The fraud came to light only when Bassamma took the exchanged chain to a nearby jewelry store for verification, where experts confirmed it was fake. By the time she realized she had been swindled and looked for the duo, they had already fled the scene. A formal complaint was subsequently lodged at the Padubidri police station.
During the investigation, the police identified the suspects as Kavya, a resident of Ballapura Buduganahalli in Tumakuru district, and Venkatesh from Santhebennur taluk in Davanagere district. Following a successful operation, the police arrested Kavya and recovered 7.610 grams of gold jewelry worth ₹75,000 and ₹6,000 in cash from her possession. While one culprit is in custody, the search for the second accused, Venkatesh, is currently underway as police continue their efforts to track him down.
