Udupi : The Udupi Principal District and Sessions Court has sentenced an accused to five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹40,000 in connection with an assault and death threat case against a jail warden at the district prison.
The incident occurred on December 3, 2011, in the veranda outside the first barrack of the Udupi District Prison, located in Anjaru village under the Hiriadka police station limits. When the jail warden instructed the inmates to return to their respective barracks so he could count them before taking charge, an undertrial prisoner named Safan Hussain alias Razak, who was near the kitchen, verbally abused the warden, issued death threats, and physically assaulted him.
A case was subsequently registered at the Hiriadka Police Station. Following the investigation, police filed a charge sheet on January 10, 2012, with the permission of the court. The accused was granted bail on May 29, 2013, but later absconded and failed to appear for court hearings, leading to the case being registered under Long Pending Case (LPC) No. 02/2022 on June 24, 2022. The absconding accused, Safan Hussain, was eventually produced before the Udupi Principal District and Sessions Court on April 23, 2026, via a body warrant, leading to the final verdict.
