Mangaluru : Capt.Brijesh Chowta said on Thursday, sad, “The two-rate GST system was a pro-people decision, which has come at an appropriate time when people celebrate Dasara, Deepavali, and other festivals. The revamped GST will give a great push to demand side, which will spur revenue for the State and the Central governments.”
Apart form Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, members of GST Council, including State Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, should be congratulated for the rationalisation of GST.
When asked about the comment by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that the two-rate GST would eat into the revenue of States, Capt. Chowta said, “It was too early to say anything about the impact of the move.”
“When the two-rate structure is likely to boost demand (for products), it was preposterous to think that there will be reduction in income (for States). The Ministers have deliberated on this in the GST council meeting and have decided to rationalise,” he said.
The GST of fast moving consumer goods, packaged items, and labour intensive products have been reduced to 5%. The GST of notebooks, pencils, crayons, and sharpeners has been reduced to zero.
