Mangaluru : The December month’s Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan (Clean Mangaluru Drive), organized by the Ramakrishna Mission, was successfully inaugurated at the Mini Vidhana Soudha premises in Hampankatta, Mangaluru. The drive was jointly flagged off by Swami Jitakamanandaji, Adhyaksha of Ramakrishna Math, Mangaluru, and Prof. Dr. M. S. Moodithaya, Vice Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed-to-be University). Several dignitaries, including Capt. Ganesh Karnik, Dr. Dhanesh Kumar (Principal, Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy), Bellala Gopinath Rao, and many senior volunteers, were present at the launch of the cleanliness initiative.
Vice Chancellor Stresses Importance of Cleanliness
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. M. S. Moodithaya praised the collective efforts that have contributed to the city’s clean image. He noted that tourists and visitors frequently appreciate the cleanliness of Mangaluru, which is a direct result of the collaboration between the Ramakrishna Mission’s Abhiyan and various government institutions. Dr. Moodithaya emphasized the dual importance of both creating competitive advantage and sustaining competitive advantage for the city’s overall development, stating that the Mission is doing commendable work in this crucial area of civic responsibility.
Comprehensive Cleaning Operations and Teams
The Shramadan saw active participation from dedicated teams of volunteers. Under the leadership of Prof. Purushothaman Chippala and other faculty members from the Nitte Institute of Physiotherapy (Dr. Rakesh, Dr. Jayesh, Dr. Nityal, and Dr. Ruchitha), a batch of student volunteers diligently cleared garden waste and non-recyclable plastic waste from within the Mini Vidhana Soudha campus. Simultaneously, a group of senior volunteers—including Uday K. P., Shivaram, Sunanda, Vasanthi Nayak, and Adv. Gangadhara Shastri—focused on tackling six identified “black spots” inside the campus. They thoroughly removed all accumulated mixed waste, significantly enhancing the cleanliness of those neglected areas.
Improving Accessibility and Aesthetics
A third dedicated team, comprising Dilraj Alva, Balakrishna Bhat, Prakash Garodi, Sachin Shetty, and others, concentrated their efforts on the main entrance area of the Mini Vidhana Soudha. Their work involved clearing unwanted plants, creepers, bushes, plastic waste, glass bottles, and unused stones. They also took the practical step of trimming tree branches that were obstructing visitor movement and vehicle parking space, thus improving both the accessibility and the overall aesthetics of the entrance. The Abhiyan, organized in association with Swacch Mangaluru Prathishtana, extended an invitation to all citizens of Mangaluru to join these monthly drives as volunteers, urging them to contribute towards building a cleaner and more socially responsible city.
Inspiring Mother-Son Volunteer Duo
A special mention was made of the inspiring involvement of Mrs. Babitha Shetty, an Assistant Professor at Canara College, who participated in the Shramadan alongside her young school-going son, Naithik. Their participation serves as an excellent example for parents across the city, demonstrating how core values, civic sense, and social responsibility can be effectively instilled in children through active, hands-on volunteerism and communal engagement.
