Mangaluru : In a major proactive enforcement drive conducted on December 30 and 31, the Mangaluru City Police screened 1,000 individuals across hostels, Paying Guest (PG) accommodations, and other locations. The operation, aimed at ensuring a drug-free environment during year-end celebrations, resulted in 52 individuals testing positive for narcotic consumption.
Demographics of Consumers: According to Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy, the 52 individuals who tested positive include a significant number of students. Out of the total, 25 are students (23 from outside the district and 2 locals), while the remaining 27 are non-students, including 17 laborers and 10 individuals from various other occupations. The Commissioner emphasized that counseling and legal actions are being managed with responsibility and sensitivity.
Major Drug Peddler Arrests: The crackdown also led to the apprehension of three alleged drug peddlers in two separate operations. On December 30, one individual was caught with 50 grams of MDMA. On the following day, two others were found in possession of 200 grams of MDMA. All three accused have prior criminal backgrounds and were already under police surveillance. Commissioner Reddy stated that these arrests are a crucial step in dismantling local drug supply networks.
Strengthening Future Strategy: The Commissioner noted that this large-scale screening exercise has provided valuable insights into the profiles of drug consumers and their consumption patterns. This intelligence will enable the police to refine their strategies to target peddlers more effectively. The Mangaluru City Police remain committed to safeguarding the youth and ensuring the city remains a safe space for its citizens.
