Kundapura: In a swift operation against illegal gambling, the Kota police apprehended a 26-year-old man for his alleged involvement in an organized online cricket betting racket linked to the T20 World Cup. The arrest took place near Coastal Paradise Hotel in Pandeshwar village following a tip-off received by the authorities. The accused, identified as Manith, a resident of Hangarakatte in Balkudru village, Brahmavar taluk, was caught red-handed on February 9 while facilitating bets on the Oman vs. Zimbabwe cricket match.
Led by Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar R, the police team conducted a raid at the spot where several individuals were reportedly engaged in betting. While the punters managed to flee the scene during the commotion, the police successfully detained Manith. Upon inspection, officials seized an iPhone used for the illegal online transactions along with ₹800 in cash, believed to be the betting proceeds. Investigations revealed that the accused was collaborating with others through a mobile application to run the illicit gambling operation. A case has been officially registered at the Kota Police Station, and the accused has since been produced before the court.
