Mangaluru : Senior Congress leader and Honorary President of the Toll Gate Removal Action Committee, B. Ramanath Rai, has issued a stern warning to the authorities, demanding the permanent closure of the Brahmarakootlu toll gate. Speaking at a preparatory meeting held at the Gurupura Block Congress office on Monday, Rai announced a massive public protest march scheduled for April 28. He criticized the toll gate for illegally collecting fees for the past 23 years without providing even the most basic infrastructure for commuters on the national highway. The protest march is set to take place from the Narayana Guru Circle in B.C. Road to the Brahmarakootlu toll gate, and Rai has urged the public to join the movement in large numbers.
KPCC General Secretary Inayat Ali, who also addressed the gathering, called upon the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to immediately address the violations of regulations regarding this toll collection. He emphasized that the protest would continue relentlessly until the illegal toll gate is shut down permanently. The leaders highlighted that the long-standing collection of fees at this point has become a significant burden on the public, especially given the lack of proper maintenance on the highway stretch.
The meeting saw the participation of several prominent leaders, including Gurupura Congress President B.L.P. Padmanabha Kotian, Surathkal Block Congress President Purushottama Chitrapura, and KPCC member R.K. Prithviraj. Other attendees included BUDA President Baby Kunder, Krishna Amin, Bhasha Gurupura, and several representatives from various local blocks. The committee has signaled that this march is a decisive step in their ongoing struggle against the toll gate, reflecting widespread public dissatisfaction in the region.
