Udupi : Following the recent sexual assault of a foreign national at a homestay in Kodagu, the Udupi district police have intensified their vigilance, launching a special operation to identify unregistered and illegal accommodations. Acting on the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order, local authorities conducted extensive raids across the district, uncovering a total of 32 homestays operating without valid permits.
The crackdown revealed a high concentration of illegal facilities in key tourist and educational hubs. According to the police department, 15 illegal homestays were identified in the Malpe station limits, followed by 7 in Kota, 5 in Padubidri, 3 in Udupi city, and 2 in Manipal. A comprehensive report detailing these violations has been submitted to the District Tourism Department for further legal action and immediate closure of these unauthorized establishments.
In addition to the raids, the police have issued a stern warning to all legitimate homestay and resort owners to strictly adhere to licensing regulations and safety protocols. Authorities emphasized that any violation of the rules would result in the immediate cancellation of their permits. Owners have been specifically instructed to prioritize the security of international guests and maintain updated registers of all occupants to prevent any untoward incidents.
