Mangaluru : The Mangaluru South (Pandeshwar) police achieved a major breakthrough on Monday, August 10, by arresting a notorious chain snatcher in Vijayapura who had previously assaulted a police personnel while in custody and fled. The arrested accused has been identified as Altaf Hussain, a native of Bagalkote, who faces six criminal cases across various parts of the state.
The incident traces back to June 14, when a gold chain was snatched from a woman near the Village Accountant’s office in Suterpet, and the culprits fled on a motorcycle. Following an investigation, police intercepted three suspects on June 26 near Rosario School in Pandeshwar. However, while being escorted to the station, Altaf Hussain physically assaulted the duty police officer, causing minor injuries, and managed to escape. A fresh case was subsequently registered under sections 121(1), 132, and 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The stolen gold chain and the motorcycle used in the crime had already been recovered from his accomplices, Ravi Boura and Mohammad Sahil Siddiqui.
To capture the fleeing suspect, a special police team led by Sub-Inspector Maruti P., along with personnel Laxman Salotagi, Sagar, and Anjaneya, was deployed. Acting on precise intelligence, the team tracked Altaf Hussain down to Vijayapura city and successfully apprehended him. The accused was produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
