Udupi : Following an extensive trial regarding a 2023 murder case in Harkuru within the Gangolli police station limits, the 1st Additional District and Sessions Court in Kundapura pronounced its final verdict on Wednesday (July 29), sentencing the convict to life imprisonment along with monetary fines.
The incident dates back to May 14, 2023, when several laborers including Sangodappa (alias Sangamesha), Sanganagowda, Raju, Mahabalesha, and Ellappa were engaged in masonry work at Harkuru village for complainant Nagaraja Achari. At around 9:15 PM, a heated argument broke out between Sangodappa and Raju regarding salary payment. Enraged during the altercation, Raju issued death threats and brutally struck Sangodappa on the head with a laterite stone, causing his death.
Following a complaint registered at the Gangolli Police Station, the then Byndoor Police Circle Inspector Santosh Kaikini conducted a detailed investigation and filed a charge sheet in court. Presiding over the case, Judge Abdul Rahim Hussain Shaikh found the accused guilty and delivered the judgment. Under Section 302 IPC, the convict was awarded life imprisonment and a fine of ₹5,000, along with one-year prison sentences and ₹5,000 fines each under Sections 504, 506, and 324 IPC. Public Prosecutor Indira Nayak argued the case on behalf of the state, while Court Monitoring Officer CPI Savyateja, Byndoor Circle Inspector Shivakumar B., Gangolli Sub-Inspector Pawan Nayak, and Court Staff Rekha played pivotal roles in producing witnesses on time to secure the conviction.
