Mangaluru : The NIA Special Court has sentenced Arafat Ali, a native of Thirthahalli in Shivamogga district, to six years of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in an ISIS-linked terror conspiracy. According to the chargesheet filed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Ali played a pivotal role in radicalizing youth and recruiting them into the global terror outfit. During his time hiding abroad, he reportedly used cryptocurrency to funnel funds to other accused individuals, including Maaz Muneer and Mohammed Shariq, to finance their anti-national activities in India.
The investigation, which gained momentum in 2022, revealed that Ali was the financial backbone for terrorists involved in high-profile cases, such as the Kadri wall graffiti in Mangaluru and the 2022 pressure cooker blast. Earlier in November 2025, co-accused Maaz Muneer Ahmed and Syed Yasin had also been sentenced to six years of imprisonment. Ali’s run from the law ended in September 2023, when he was dramatically apprehended at the Delhi airport by security forces upon his arrival from Kenya.
This sentencing marks a significant blow to the terror network in Karnataka, where the NIA had arrested a total of 12 individuals for conspiring to expand ISIS operations. The court took a serious view of Ali’s connections with the Syria-based terror organization and his efforts to mislead young minds into committing acts of violence. With Ali being the third person to be sentenced in this case, the verdict underscores the judicial and investigative crackdown on terrorism and its digital funding mechanisms in the state.
