Mangaluru : In a landmark development for coastal Karnataka, the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has strongly endorsed the Railway Board’s official decision to merge the Mangaluru railway section—stretching up to and including Ullal—into the Mysuru Division under the South Western Railway (SWR). Transitioning away from the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway, this long-awaited administrative realignment is set to take effect on October 1, 2026.
Highlighting the economic significance of the move, KCCI President P.B. Ahmed Mudassar emphasized that integrating the coastal rail infrastructure directly with the rest of the state will unlock vast commercial opportunities. The seamless connectivity is expected to grant local businesses broader access to newer markets, boost regional freight and trade, and generate a substantial multiplier effect across the local economy.
Addressing the historical challenges, the Chamber pointed out that the region’s rail network had remained fragmented across three separate zones for decades. This division led to severe coordination bottlenecks, frequent delays in sanctioning new passenger trains, service enhancements, and crucial infrastructure investments. The successful campaign reflects years of persistent advocacy by passenger associations, civic groups, and industry leaders who actively petitioned the Union Ministry of Railways.
The KCCI extended its deep appreciation to Mangaluru MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta for his unwavering efforts since assuming office, including championing the cause in Parliament and engaging directly with the Railway Ministry. Expressing gratitude to the Union Government and the Railway Ministry for executing this crucial transition, the Chamber noted that it eagerly awaits the official Gazette Notification to begin collaborating with the new administration.
