MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta Directs Officials to Form Action Plan to Provide Housing for Every Koraga Family Under PM-JANMAN

Mangaluru : Member of Parliament Capt. Brijesh Chowta directed officials to formulate a comprehensive action plan to ensure every Koraga family in Dakshina Kannada district receives a house under the PM-JANMAN scheme while presiding over the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting at the Netravathi Hall of the Zilla Panchayat on Saturday. ITDP Officer Basavaraju informed the meeting that mapping for 1,135 Koraga families in the district has been completed. Applications for 165 beneficiaries under various schemes, including PM-JANMAN, have been processed, while 124 applications await final approval. He noted that despite the absence of financial constraints, some beneficiaries who received sanctions are hesitant to begin construction. Highlighting that the Central Government recognizes the Koraga and Jenu Kuruba communities among the most vulnerable tribal groups, Capt. Chowta emphasized the need to bring these families into the mainstream and suggested engaging NGOs to bridge information gaps and assist in building quality homes. In response to nominated member Bharath Kumar’s point that the current unit cost of ₹4.5 lakh is insufficient to construct a home, the MP stated that additional funding would need to be discussed at the government level.

Updating the committee on developmental projects, Zilla Panchayat CEO Vinoth Karbhari explained that initial login delays in the VBG RAM G scheme due to technical glitches have been resolved, and progress is gaining momentum. Out of 18,000 sanctioned works in the district—including 9,000 horticulture projects—a target of 15 lakh person-days of employment has been fixed, following the creation of 9 lakh person-days against a 10 lakh target under MGNREGA last year. Furthermore, following the detachment of the Mangaluru railway network from Palakkad to the Mysuru division, Capt. Chowta advised Southern Railway officials to coordinate with local public representatives to construct a new railway station between Jokatte and the Mangaluru International Airport. Addressing the status of the Plastic Park in Ganjimutt, built under the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, KIADB officials assured that remaining works would be completed by September end, prompting the MP to announce an inauguration target by the end of October. Officials added that 16 applications have been received for the 48 plots available across the 41.15-acre site.
