Mangaluru : In a proactive bid to curb substance abuse among youth, the Mangaluru City Police carried out a surprise drug screening drive targeting college students near Kotekar Beeri and Konaje Bunts Bhavana. Supervised by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) and coordinated by Assistant Commissioners of Police from the South and Central Sub-divisions, the operation ran from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Police intercepted private and institution buses to test students on the spot using multi-drug testing kits.
During the drive at Kotekar Beeri under the Ullal Police Station limits, authorities screened 72 students belonging to various institutions, including SDM College, Nitte K.S. Hegde, St. Aloysius College, P.A. College, Bearys Institute, Tipu Sultan College, and Canara College. Out of these, 71 students tested negative, while one student returned a positive result for drug use. Simultaneously, near Bunts Bhavana under the Konaje Police Station jurisdiction, two P.A. College buses were intercepted, and all 87 students tested returned negative results.
Police officials noted that having only a single positive case out of 159 students tested is an encouraging sign, indicating a potential decline in substance abuse among the student population. However, they stressed that continued enforcement and vigilance remain crucial to completely eradicating the drug menace. The student who tested positive will be referred for professional counseling following mandatory legal procedures, while authorities monitor further developments in the case.
