Kundapur : A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Monday at the heart of Kundapura town, specifically in the Rathbeedi (Car Street) area. The fire erupted in a building situated right across from the Sri Venkataramana Temple, completely gutting several business establishments. As the incident occurred during the dawn, the flames spread rapidly, engulfing multiple shops before the fire services could arrive at the scene.
The inferno resulted in the destruction of goods worth lakhs of rupees. Small and medium-scale traders, who had been operating their businesses in this building for decades, have suffered an irreparable blow. Vital inventory, furniture, electronic appliances, and cash within the premises were reduced to ashes within minutes. Upon receiving the information, Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Manjunath Bhandary visited the spot to assess the damage. He met with the affected shopkeepers, offered his condolences, and assured them that he would pursue the matter with the state government to ensure they receive adequate compensation and financial aid.
While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be officially determined, preliminary investigations by the fire department suggest a short circuit as the likely trigger. Firefighters worked strenuously to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to adjacent heritage structures. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the mishap. Local municipal officials and the police have conducted a spot inspection and are currently documenting the extent of the loss for further proceedings.
