Minor Rescue: 15-Year-Old Adolescent Worker Rescued from Bar in Uppinangady During Surprise Raid

Uppinangady : In a joint raid conducted by the Labor Department officials from Puttur and Childline coordinators, a 15-year-old adolescent worker hailing from Bihar was discovered working at Karthik Bar and Restaurant in Uppinangady. The minor, who had been employed as a cleaner at the establishment, was immediately rescued from the workplace and subsequently produced before the Child Welfare Committee to facilitate proper rehabilitation.

The operation was spearheaded by Senior Labor Inspector for the Puttur Circle, Veerendra Kumbar, alongside Srinivas, Project Director of the District Child Labor Project Society, and Child Helpline Coordinator Ganesh P. Following the rescue, legal proceedings to lodge a case against the establishment owner under the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, are currently underway, according to an official press statement issued by the Assistant Labour Commissioner of the Mangaluru Division.

Highlighting child labor as a severe social evil, authorities reiterated that the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 strictly prohibits employing children under 14 years of age in any commercial establishment. Furthermore, engaging adolescents aged 15 to 18 in hazardous industries is illegal, while their employment in non-hazardous setups remains heavily regulated. Employers found violating the law face stringent penalties, including fines up to ₹50,000, imprisonment for up to two years, and the registration of an FIR by the police department.
