Puttur : A degree student from Puttur has lodged an official complaint with the Chief Minister of Karnataka and the KSRTC Divisional Controller after a bus conductor refused to honor student bus passes due to a temporary route diversion. Buses operating from Puttur to Uppinangady generally travel via the Puttur-Bollar route, where students from Vivekananda College board at Bollar Junction. However, ongoing road widening work at Haradi near Bollar has led to a prohibition on heavy vehicles, prompting buses heading towards Uppinangady to depart from the main bus stand and take a detour through the APMC route before rejoining the Uppinangady highway near Kotecha Hall.

Because of this detour, passengers and students are forced to board buses directly at the Puttur bus stand instead of Bollar Junction. The issue arose when Jithesh N., a final-year BCA student at Vivekananda College, along with four to five fellow students, boarded a Puttur-Dharmasthala KSRTC bus to travel to Uppinangady. The conductor rejected their bus passes on the grounds that their passes listed “Bollar” as the designated starting point, demanding full ticket fares since they boarded at the main bus stand instead.

Despite the students explaining that buses were not operating through Bollar due to the official roadwork diversion, the conductor remained adamant and collected full ticket charges from them. In his formal complaint to the Chief Minister, Jithesh highlighted the unfairness of penalizing students for route changes mandated by public works, stressing that KSRTC should account for official detours so that students with valid passes are not forced to pay full fares.
