Mangaluru : During a quarterly KDP meeting held at the Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat auditorium on Tuesday, MLA Dr. Y. Bharat Shetty issued a stern directive to organize a special meeting in the presence of the Deputy Commissioner to address the acute water shortage in the Mangaluru Taluk region. The water crisis has hit several areas, including Gurupura, Ganjimath, Adyapadi, Kandavara, and Paduperara, primarily due to the ongoing National Highway construction work along the Gurupura-Kaikamba stretch.
The Water Supply Department engineers informed the assembly that the highway expansion has significantly disrupted existing infrastructure. They highlighted that no ‘utility ducts’ or alternative arrangements were made for water pipelines during the construction phase, leaving local panchayats struggling to maintain a steady supply. Responding to this, Dr. Bharat Shetty emphasized that providing water to the public is a fundamental duty and any technical hurdles caused by the highway project must be resolved immediately through higher administrative intervention.
Furthermore, officials noted that the Multi-Village Scheme (MVS), which caters to Gurupura, Muttur, Muchur, Ulaibettu, and Edapadavu, is facing additional pressure due to the peak summer season. The depletion of water sources combined with infrastructure damage has led to irregular supply schedules. The MLA insisted that a coordinated effort between the Revenue Department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is essential to ensure that residents do not suffer during the summer months.
