Moodbidri : Police have successfully apprehended two individuals involved in the illegal transportation of cattle. The arrested suspects have been identified as Mohammed Arif, a resident of Handel, and his accomplice Imran, also known as Ibrahim, from Gantalakatte. The operation took place early Thursday morning following a tip-off received by PSI Krishnappa and his team while they were on patrolling duty.
The police intercepted the suspects near Gundukallu Cross in Padumarnadu village. Upon spotting a Maruti Brezza approaching from Beluvai, the officers signaled it to stop. However, the driver defied the orders and sped away. After a brief chase, the vehicle turned into a road leading to a private compound belonging to one Sahul Hammed. The suspects attempted to flee on foot but were quickly surrounded and detained by the police personnel.
During the subsequent inspection of the vehicle, police discovered a male calf hidden in the rear. The back seats had been removed and covered with a blue plastic sheet to facilitate the smuggling. The animal was found bound tightly by its head and legs in a cruel and suffocating manner. Upon interrogation, the accused confessed to stealing cattle from various locations over the past week, stating they intended to slaughter the animal at the compound to sell the meat.
The police have seized the calf and the vehicle used for the crime. Investigations revealed that both suspects are habitual offenders; Mohammed Arif has prior cases registered against him at Bajpe, Banakal, and Moodbidri stations, while Imran faces charges at Moodbidri and Karkala Town police stations. Further legal proceedings are currently underway.
