Panakkad Sayyid Nasir Abdul Hayya Shihabuddin Ba-Alawi Takes Charge as New Qazi of Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru : Panakkad Sayyid Nasir Abdul Hayya Shihabuddin Ba-Alawi officially assumed office as the new Qazi of Dakshina Kannada district during a solemn ceremony held on Wednesday at the Zeenath Baksh Yatheem Khana Hall on Ansari Road, Bunder, Mangaluru.

The office had fallen vacant following the demise of former Qazi Shaikhuna Alhaj Twaka Ahmed Musliyar Al-Azhari. The event was presided over by Dr. Haji Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, President of Masjid Zeenath Baksh and Idgah Juma Masjid, with the inaugural address delivered by Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, Treasurer of Samastha Education Board and President of the Kerala Muslim League.

Addressing the gathering, Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal highlighted Mangaluru’s rich Islamic history, noting how ancestors who came to propagate the faith were warmly welcomed with respect by fellow citizens of other faiths in the region. He prayed for divine guidance and blessings for Sayyid Nasir Shihabuddin Ba-Alawi as he steps into this significant religious responsibility. Key dignitaries present including Samastha General Secretary Shaikhuna M.T. Abdullah Musliyar, Samastha Treasurer Shaikhuna Koyyode Umar Musliyar, SYS Central Secretary Abdussamad Pookottoor, and Health Minister U.T. Khader extended their heartiest congratulations and best wishes to the new Qazi.

The event witnessed the participation of prominent community leaders, religious scholars, and public figures, including Sayyid Atakoya Thangal Kumbol, Kavaratti (Lakshadweep) Qazi Sayyid E.P. Saidali Thangal, Karnataka Haj Committee member Sayyid Ashraf Thangal Adoor, Coastal Development Authority Chairman M.A. Gafoor, Kasaragod MLA Mahin Haji, and former Mayor K. Ashraf, among many others. Zeenath Baksh and Idgah Juma Masjid General Secretary Muhammad Haneef Haji introduced the new Qazi, while Treasurer Haji S.M. Rasheed welcomed the guests, and Vice President K. Ashraf delivered the vote of thanks.

Born on May 2, 1966, at Poovad near Panakkad in Malappuram district, Kerala, Sayyid Nasir Ba-Alawi has built a distinguished career as a Khatib, Mudarris, and Islamic scholar. Following his father’s demise, he served as Qazi in the Andaman Islands, was appointed Grand Qazi of Calicut in 2009, and currently serves as Qazi for over 300 Mahal subs across Malappuram, Palakkad, and Thrissur districts. He also holds prominent academic and leadership roles, serving as Principal of Imam Ghazali Academy and Rashidiya Arabic College in Wayanad, and holding senior posts in the Sunni Mahal Federation and Samastha Kerala Jam-iyyathul Ulama.
