Haryana : In a historic milestone for India’s transportation sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the nation’s first-ever hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route during a grand event held in Jind, Haryana, on Friday. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister announced that India has proudly entered an exclusive global club of nations utilizing clean hydrogen technology. He highlighted that the newly launched train features a massive 3,200 horsepower propulsion system, officially making it the most powerful and the longest hydrogen-powered train ever constructed globally.
Reflecting on the evolution of global railway technology, PM Modi noted that hydrogen fuel cell systems emerged only over the last seven to eight years. Currently, just three or four advanced nations run hydrogen trains, and even their technology remains in its early experimental stages. The Prime Minister emphasized that the superior capacity and advanced engineering of India’s indigenous hydrogen train is a moment of immense pride for every citizen. He confidently projected that while the 19th century was defined by steam engines and the 20th century by diesel and electric powertrains, the 21st century will undeniably belong to hydrogen-powered eco-friendly locomotion.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the unprecedented pace of growth within the Indian Railways network over the past decade. He compared past administrations to the present, pointing out that from 1925 to 2014—a span of nearly 90 years—only 30 percent of India’s railway lines were electrified. In stark contrast, 99 percent of the country’s vast railway grid has been electrified over the last 12 years, with Haryana achieving a flawless 100 percent rail electrification. PM Modi emphasized that this rapid shift toward energy self-reliance is precisely what has insulated India’s transportation network from global supply chain disruptions and ongoing international oil crises.
Expanding beyond rail, PM Modi dedicated several major infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹14,700 crore to the nation. These projects include the Haryana section of the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway, the Jind–Gohana National Highway, and the Ambala–Kala Amb four-lane highway. The Prime Minister noted that these integrated road and rail connectivity networks go beyond providing mere convenience to travelers; they serve as critical catalysts that will accelerate the nation’s economic progress multiple times over.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister recalled his recent official visits to Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand, revealing that India has forged new partnerships to co-develop sports industries and advanced athlete training programs with Australia and New Zealand. He mentioned that this international cooperation would significantly benefit the sporting community, especially in sports-centric states like Haryana. He reiterated that through robust initiatives like the ‘Khelo Bharat’ policy, the ‘Khelo India’ campaign, and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), the government is equipping Indian athletes with world-class facilities and opportunities. The high-profile event was also attended by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
