Mangaluru : Emphasizing that the protection of the living world relies heavily on clean water, pure food, and a healthy ecosystem, Dakshina Kannada District Commissioner Darshan H.V. stated that safeguarding our surroundings is a fundamental duty of every citizen. He was speaking after inaugurating the World Environment Day celebrations held on Friday at KPT in the city. The event was jointly organized by the District Administration, District Panchayat, Forest Department, and the State Pollution Control Board. He noted that if individuals take initiative to maintain and protect the ecosystem around their own homes, society will naturally foster a healthier environment. He further cautioned that modern lifestyle pressures are rapidly depleting natural resources, and preserving nature has become absolutely essential for the survival of future generations.
Echoing similar concerns, Jaibunnisa, the Member Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, highlighted how environmental degradation directly compromises human health. She remarked that humanity must proactively defend its surroundings, reminding the audience that if we protect nature, nature will protect us in return. The event witnessed the presence of several prominent dignitaries, including District Panchayat Deputy Secretary Jayalakshmi Rayakoda, Senior Environmental Officer Rajashekar Puranik, KPT Principal Harish Shetty, retired NITK Professor Sri Niketan, and Pollution Control Board Officer Manju, alongside various other departmental officials.
The celebration also featured an award ceremony where prizes were distributed to the winners of different environment-themed competitions. As a part of the eco-friendly initiative, seed balls and cloth bags were distributed to the participants. Prior to the formal stage program, an awareness rally was organized from Yeyyadi to KPT to mark World Environment Day. The rally, which saw enthusiastic participation, was officially flagged off by Principal District Judge Basavaraj.
