Belthangady : In a remarkable feat of wildlife conservation, sixteen cobra hatchlings were successfully released into the wild in the Charmadi Ghat forest range. These snakes were born through artificial incubation after their eggs were rescued from a residential area in Neriya village, Beltangady. The mission was spearheaded by renowned local snake expert Anil Kakkinje, who ensured the survival of the reptiles after they were found in a highly vulnerable state.
The rescue operation began a few days ago when cobra eggs were discovered embedded within the wall of Bommanna Gowda’s house in Gundikanda. At the time of discovery, the eggs were under threat as a swarm of ants had begun attacking them. Recognizing the danger, Anil carefully extracted the eggs and moved them to a controlled environment. By providing the necessary warmth and care through artificial incubation, he facilitated the successful hatching of 16 healthy cobras.
Following the birth of the hatchlings, Anil coordinated with the Forest Department to ensure their safe transition back to nature. This is not the first such success for the snake expert; just last month, he successfully incubated and released 28 water snakes in Thotathadi village. Anil expressed his commitment to preserving these reptiles, noting that artificial incubation serves as a vital tool in protecting snake populations when their natural nesting sites are disturbed by human activity.
