Belthangady : In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court of India has ordered a fresh investigation into the 2012 Sowjanya rape and murder case in Dharmasthala. The apex court directed the formation of a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough probe and complete the investigation within a three-month deadline. Additionally, the court explicitly instructed that officers involved in the previous investigations must be excluded from the new team to ensure an impartial probe.
The order follows a Special Leave Petition filed by Sowjanya’s mother, Kusumavathi, who moved the Supreme Court after the Karnataka High Court dismissed her plea seeking a re-investigation. Previously, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had acquitted the sole accused, Santhosh Rao, leaving the perpetrator unidentified. The judgment, delivered by a bench led by Justice Sanjay Kumar which had earlier reserved its verdict, marks a significant turn in the 14-year-old case as the new SIT prepares to re-examine the matter from a fresh perspective.
