Belthangady: An unexpected emergency unfolded at the famous tourist destination of Gadaikallu (Narasimagada) fort on June 4, when a young trekker twisted his leg while ascending the steep rocky steps, leaving him stranded mid-way. The incident triggered a massive response from rescue personnel, who launched an intense three-hour operation to safely bring the youth down the treacherous terrain.
The rescued trekker has been identified as 30-year-old Mohammed Shareef, a resident of Janata Colony in Tannirupantha village. He had reportedly embarked on the trek to the historic fort with a group of three others, including two women.
The trouble began during their climb up the notoriously steep and carved rock steps when Shareef suffered a severe ankle twist. Paralyzed by excruciating pain, he found himself completely unable to move or descend from the middle of the hill. Realizing the danger of the situation, his companions immediately contacted the Belthangady Fire Station to seek urgent assistance.
Upon receiving the distress call, a joint rescue force comprising personnel from the Fire Brigade, the Forest Department, and members of the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Shaurya Disaster Management Team rushed to the spot to initiate a coordinated rescue operation.
The mission, however, was fraught with extreme difficulties due to persistent rains that had made the steep rocky steps incredibly slippery. Carrying an injured person on a stretcher down such a vertical slope posed a significant challenge to the rescue teams. Demonstrating immense grit, the combined squads persevered through three hours of strenuous labor, carefully navigating 1,500 slippery steps over a distance of 1.5 kilometers to safely bring the youth down to the base. Shareef was immediately administered first aid at the scene and subsequently shifted to the Belthangady Government Hospital for further medical attention, where he is reported to be out of danger.
