Mangaluru : A case has been registered at the Kadri Police Station in Mangaluru against Sharan Pumpwell, a leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), and Vikas P. for allegedly sharing an objectionable video on social media. The Kadri police took both individuals into custody on Friday and subsequently released them. They have been served a notice to appear for questioning on Monday.
The charge stems from a video clip of a speech by an RSS leader, which the accused allegedly shared with the caption: “Let us stand up against the Muslim Population Jihad.” The police filed a suo motu (on its own) case, asserting that sharing content that incites hatred against Muslims and hurts Muslim sentiments could lead to a breach of law and order.
The incident was marked by a gathering of BJP and VHP leaders outside the police station. The BJP District President Satish Kumpla, MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Yuva Morcha District President Nandan Mallya, and other functionaries objected to Sharan Pumpwell being taken into custody without a prior notice.
Commenting on the incident, Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy confirmed that a case has been registered at the Kadri station regarding the objectionable post on social media, and the post has since been deleted. He stated that a notice has been issued for the accused to appear for questioning on Monday. Furthermore, the Commissioner mentioned that processes have begun to forfeit the bond that Sharan Pumpwell had furnished while securing bail in a previous case.
