Kundapura : The coastal town of Kundapura is in mourning following the sad demise of seasoned journalist, retired lecturer, and Panchayat Raj luminary S. Janardana Maravanthe (88). He breathed his last on Saturday, June 6, at a private hospital in Kundapura after a brief period of illness. He is survived by his two sons, a large circle of relatives, friends, and countless admirers who are deeply grieved by his departure.
Beyond his contributions to journalism, Maravanthe made monumental strides in the realms of education, literature, and rural development. He served with distinction as a part-time correspondent for prestigious Kannada dailies like Udayavani and Prajavani for nearly twenty-five years. Recognizing the need for a unified voice for scribes, he became the founding president and later the honorary president of the Byndoor Taluk Working Journalists Association.
His political and administrative acumen came to the fore during his 15-year tenure as a member of the Maravanthe Gram Panchayat, where he served as president twice. Under his visionary leadership, Maravanthe Panchayat earned the distinction of being a ‘Model Panchayat’. His profound expertise in the Panchayat Raj system made him a highly sought-after resource person, drawing invitations from top universities and apex institutions across the country.
Academia and literature were equally close to his heart. He retired as an English lecturer from the Government Pre-University College in Naunda and had the unique honor of presiding over the debut Byndoor Taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. His literary prowess was demonstrated in his highly acclaimed book ‘Janadhikara’, which successfully ran into four editions due to its immense popularity among readers.
In validation of his lifelong commitment to social work and grassroots governance, the Government of Karnataka conferred upon him the prestigious ‘Senior Citizen State Award’ in 2021. His trophy cabinet was also adorned with the District Rajyotsava Award, the Sadananda Award, and numerous other accolades. Family sources have stated that his mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at the ‘Sadhana’ Community Hall in Maravanthe on Sunday, June 7, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, allowing well-wishers to pay their final respects.
