Mangaluru : The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Co-operative (CAMPCO) has officially welcomed the announcement regarding the proposed establishment of the prestigious ‘Prof. U.R. Rao Advanced Science Centre’ in Udupi. Sri S.R. Sathishchandra, the President of CAMPCO, stated that this highly anticipated initiative, once fully implemented, will serve as a monumental milestone for scientific education, academic exploration, and advanced research across the entire coastal region. He expressed immense optimism that the center will fundamentally transform how the local youth engage with modern science and space technology.
In light of this development, CAMPCO recalled the pioneering efforts of its former President, Sri A. Kishore Kumar Kodgi, who had submitted a comprehensive proposal to the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi as early as 2023. That proposal urgently sought the establishment of a dedicated Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) laboratory unit right within the Udupi district. The primary objectives behind that initial request were to formally honor the brilliant scientists associated with India’s prestigious Chandrayaan missions and to actively cultivate a robust environment for advanced space science research in the region.
The core of the historical proposal had strongly highlighted the disproportionately large and significant contributions made by scientists hailing from both the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts to India’s core space programs. It aggressively advocated for the creation of a premier scientific institution specifically dedicated to the memory of the late Prof. Udupi Ramachandra Rao, the internationally renowned space scientist from Udupi who played a foundational role in strengthening India’s global space research and satellite capabilities over several decades.
The newly proposed science center is estimated to be developed at an initial cost of approximately ₹6.2 crore and will be sprawled across a spacious five-acre campus. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to feature highly immersive infrastructure, including an Aero-Space Gallery and various other scientific attractions tailored specifically to inspire students, school children, and young researchers toward the fields of innovation, physics, and space technology. Concluding his statement, Sri S.R. Sathishchandra expressed his sincere hope that this project will pave the way for many more premier scientific and research institutions to be established in the coastal belt in the coming years.
