Mangaluru : The Dakshina Kannada District Judiciary will hold the National Lok Adalat with the theme ‘For speedy justice’ in the district on July 12 to settle compoundable civil and criminal litigations in different courts in the district.
Basavaraj, Principal District & Sessions Judge, and Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, told reporters here on Friday that of the 57,305 cases referred to the Lok Adalat, the proceedings on July 12 would take up 9,302 cases and strive to settle at least 3,148 cases. The district judiciary has sought cooperation from all stakeholders, including litigants, advocates, police, judges, and the general public, for the success of the National Lok Adalat, he said.
Mr. Basavaraj said during the Lok Adalat on March 8 that as many as 6,324 cases out of 57,105 cases referred were taken up, and 3,510 cases were settled. Of the 46,330 pre-litigation cases, 37,549 cases were settled during the adalat, he noted.
The judge noted that a host of cases, including civil, matrimonial, motor vehicle accident claims, cheque bounce cases, and other matters, as well as compoundable criminal cases pending before the courts in the district, would be settled during the Lok Adalat. Also, issues related to bank loan recovery, electricity supply companies, and other similar cases that may arise before the courts will be considered pre-litigation cases and addressed after both parties have been called for settlement.
Under the ‘Saathi’ campaign, the Lok Adalat has been working to obtain Aadhaar cards for orphan children, Mr. Basavaraj said, urging local bodies to issue birth certificates for them. He said free legal aid was available for women and children through the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority. When cases are settled before Lok Adalats, the court fee paid by litigants would be refunded.
Mr Basavaraj urged people to make use of the Lok Adalat, whose decisions were as good as decisions by the courts concerned, to settle trivial and long-pending cases, thereby reducing the burden of long-pending cases before the judiciary.
Authority member secretary and Civil Judge (Senior Division) Jaibunnisa and others were present.
